Angelina Jolie’s Latest Tattoo Symbolizes an Astronomical Legacy

In a departure from the norm of A-list Hollywood actresses in the past, Angelina Jolie has proudly displayed her extensive collection of tattoos. Rejecting the notion that inked skin is incompatible with acting roles, Jolie continues to embrace body art. As she returns to the forefront of the camera with her role in Marvel’s Eternals, she has unveiled a new tattoo on her forearm, spotted during her recent appearance in New York City.

The tattoo features a small Italian quote in delicate script, attributed to the renowned Renaissance scientist Galileo. The words, “eppur si muove,” translate to “and yet it moves” in English. This phrase carries a profound historical significance. Galileo, when sentenced to a lifetime of house arrest, is believed to have uttered these words.

His conviction for heresy resulted from his belief in heliocentrism, the theory that the Earth revolves around the Sun, challenging the contemporary interpretation of Creation theory by the Roman Catholic Church. Despite the threat of torture, Galileo stood firm in his scientific convictions but was ultimately forced to recant his work. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest until his passing in 1642. In 1992, the Church officially apologized for its treatment of Galileo.

Jolie’s new tattoo joins a collection of other meaningful ink on her body. Positioned above a quote from Rumi, it complements three traditional Cambodian talismans known as Sank Yats, which were skillfully tattooed onto her back by Ajarn Noo Kanpai, a former Buddhist monk. Among her other notable tattoos, Jolie proudly bears the coordinates representing the birthplaces of her six children on her arm.
