Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Santo António, a disadvantaged neighborhood in Funchal, Portugal. His father, Dinis, worked as a gardener and kitman at a local club called Andorinha, introducing him to football and arranging for FerNao Barros Sousa, a player from the club, to become Ronaldo’s godfather. Sousa recognized Ronaldo’s exceptional skills at a young age, and he went on to play for Nacional’s youth team before being signed by Sporting Lisbon.
Ronaldo rose to prominence when he joined Manchester United in 2003. His former junior teammate, Ricardo Santos, remembers him as a humble and grounded child who would cry when he didn’t have the ball or when his teammates fought. His mother, Dolores, worked as a cook, and his father, Dinis, worked as a gardener. Ronaldo spent his early years in Santo António, a neighborhood known for its poverty.
Tragically, Ronaldo’s father passed away when the footballer was just 20 years old due to alcohol-related issues he had struggled with while working part-time as a kitman at the local club Noronha. Despite this personal tragedy, Ronaldo, who is considered one of the greatest strikers in the world, persevered and continued to excel in the world of sports.
The club Andorinha had requested FerNao Barros Sousa, who had previously played for the island’s biggest club, Nacional, to become Ronaldo’s godfather. Ronaldo played for the Andorinha youth team before moving on to the Nacional youth team and eventually securing a breakthrough in European football by signing with Sporting Lisbon.
Ronaldo’s passion for football was evident from a young age. While other children focused on their studies, he would prioritize playing with everyone he could. His father’s influence and having everything under control on the field, playing with everything he had, shaped his early development. Ronaldo would often try to imitate the older players, practicing dribbling and emulating their techniques.
Sousa wasn’t the only one impressed by Ronaldo’s abilities. His former junior teammate, Ricardo Santos, always admired how grounded Ronaldo remained despite his talents. They were both eight years old when they first met, and Santos, who has been running Andorinha since then, recalls Ronaldo as a humble kid who would shed tears when things didn’t go his way. Little did they know that Ronaldo would go on to achieve a brilliant career, winning five Ballon d’Or awards and leading Portugal to victory in the 2016 European Cup.
