Waterworld (1995 vs 2023) Cast: Then and Now [28 Years After] by HollywoodNuts
American post-apocalyptic action movie Waterworld, from 1995, was written and directed by Peter Rader and David Twohy. It was based on Rader’s original 1986 script, and Kevin Costner, Charles Gordon, and John Davis served as the film’s producers. Universal Pictures was in charge of distribution.
The movie takes place in the far-off future. The whole polar ice cap has melted, and the sea level has increased by more than 7,600 m (25,000 ft), nearly engulfing the entire planet. The film’s story revolves around “The Mariner,” an unnamed antihero who travels the Earth aboard his trimaran as a drifter.
Critics were divided when Waterworld, the most costly movie ever made at the time, was released. They appreciated the futuristic location and premise but faulted the execution, notably the characterization and acting performances. Despite being one of the highest-grossing movies of 1995, the movie also failed to recoup its enormous budget at the box office; however, the movie later turned a profit thanks to video and other post-cinema sales. At the 68th Academy Awards, the movie received a nomination in the Best Sound category.
A novelization, computer game, and four themed attractions dubbed Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular were released alongside the movie and are still in operation as of 2023 at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Singapore, Universal Studios Japan, and Universal Studios Beijing.
